Did you know that WARM stands for Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry? WARM is a Christian community dedicated to showing Christ’s love by providing shelter and support to those in need. Our church had the privilege of hosting the 2024-2025 WARM’s Cold Weather Shelter during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. This was an excellent opportunity not only to raise the temperature but also to warm the hearts of the participants. During these weeks, numerous volunteers and staff from WARM worked in unison to host, feed, and provide for hundreds in our community that are struggling through various situations, including homelessness or mediatory positions where they are in need of support from those who can. This ministry is especially important during these times as outside temperatures can get below or around 0° during the nights where they would otherwise be sleeping outside. WARM operates this ministry in a handful of churches in the area, so we are simply a cog in the larger wheel of good that is coming from this wonderful partnership. If you would like to help WARM as a volunteer as they continue this ministry, please do not hesitate to reach out to their office at (540)324-8166 or click HERE.

“To the Reverend, officers, and members of this House of Worship, please accept this as a token of my sincere and heartfelt gratitude at being permitted to utilize your shower facilities. Mere words fall short at conveying just how rejuvenating and utterly redeeming such a benison is to one in my situation. All of you responsible for facilitating this lovingkindness should laud yourselves in that you truly emulate Christ’s values and deeds. Your generosity will aid in making my future path an easier road to travel. Thank you all, ever so much!”

Once again, our church’s Christian love was on full display when the Waynesboro Area Refuge Ministry (WARM) shelter was here during Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks.  These homeless neighbors of ours expressed tremendous gratitude for the chance to sleep inside in a warm loving environment.  They raved about the delicious food and being able to take a hot shower!

During Thanksgiving week, we served nearly 360 individual meals to the 18 to 20 guests we had that week.  Most of them got a shower at least one night.  We served many more Christmas week when the number increased to an average of 27 a night.  That means nearly 570 meals were served.

So far, the number of homeless guests staying with us and at other WARM shelter sites has increased at an alarming rate since last year.  Homelessness and food insecurity are only becoming more prevalent here and around the country.  God uses the congregation of Fishersville United Methodist Church as an instrument of love, compassion, and tolerance.

On a personal note, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all those who cooked, served, cleaned, transported, and shared your time to offer love and save lives.
“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.."
